In the era of widespread remote work, the convergence of technology and security concerns has become a paramount issue for individuals and businesses alike. As the digital landscape evolves, the risk of cyberattacks looms larger than ever. A recent study conducted by Beyond Identity sheds light on the vulnerable workspaces and common cybersecurity mistakes that could jeopardize the safety of remote work environments.
Identifying Vulnerable Workspaces
According to the Beyond Identity survey of 1,019 remote workers, certain workspaces stand out as particularly susceptible to cyber threats:
1. Co-working Spaces (18%): Topping the list of vulnerable locations, co-working spaces pose a significant risk with 18% of respondents reporting data theft incidents.
2. Libraries, Coffee Shops, and Cafes (17%): Public areas such as libraries and coffee shops follow closely behind, with 17% experiencing cybersecurity breaches.
3. Different Countries (21% of 13%): Remote workers operating in different countries are at a higher risk, with 21% of respondents falling victim to cyberattacks.
4. Different Cities (15% of 72%): Those working from cities different from their company's location also face threats, with 15% having their work information stolen.
Additionally, the study highlights that remote workers using iPhones (17%) and Macs (16%) are more likely than PC (14%) and Android users (12%) to suffer information theft.
Common Cybersecurity Mistakes
The survey identifies nine common cybersecurity mistakes made by remote workers, emphasizing the need for heightened awareness and proactive security measures:
The study further reveals that finance industry employees are more prone to password-related lapses, while retail and professional services workers show higher rates of using public Wi-Fi and ignoring security warnings, respectively.
How Employers Can Bolster Cybersecurity
The study advocates for increased cybersecurity training among remote workers, especially in industries identified as most vulnerable. Despite the rising threat landscape, only 51% of remote employees received cybersecurity training from their employers. Key practices taught include two-factor authentication, VPN utilization, and regular device and software updates.
The Role of the Digital Bunker®
In the realm of secure Virtual Desktop Infrastructures (VDIs), TetherView's Digital Bunker® stands out as a robust solution. Digital Bunker® provides a secure and centralized environment for hosting data and applications on servers rather than individual devices. By leveraging the advanced security features of Digital Bunker®, remote workers can enjoy a fortified workspace, minimizing the risk of data breaches even in vulnerable locations such as co-working spaces and public Wi-Fi hotspots. The adoption of TetherView's Digital Bunker exemplifies a proactive approach towards enhancing cybersecurity in the era of widespread remote work.
As remote work continues to reshape the modern work landscape, safeguarding against cyber threats becomes imperative. Employers must prioritize cybersecurity training, and the adoption of VDIs can further fortify remote work environments, ensuring the protection of sensitive data and maintaining the integrity of the digital workspace.
