The Rise of the Virtual Desktop

Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) has been around for decades (since the 1990s believe it or not!). Traditionally, organizations deployed VDI to provide users with access to higher performing servers that couldn’t be afforded internally or supported in-house. Essentially, VDI gave the company access to critical infrastructure for intense computing, resource-hungry applications, and databases, all at a price they could afford.

Today, organizations look to VDI to solve other modern technological demands. Comprehensive VDI solutions are amazing assets to organizations who may not be able to afford the robust infrastructure they need to thrive while also increasing operational efficiency. VDI can enhance cybersecurity, simplify compliance, streamline device management, and support workforce mobility, touching on four main categories that companies often view as priorities.

Although the overall market penetration of Virtual Desktops has been slower than many other cloud computing solutions, it’s been on a steady rise. By 2022, the VDI market is expected to grow by an astonishing $5 billion.

Microsoft's Virtual Desktop Announcement

Just a few days ago, Microsoft introduced a solution that might affect the future of end-user computing for all of us. Their own version of Windows Virtual Desktop (You’ve heard the rumors that Windows 10 might be the last local OS? It might actually be true…) began its public preview, increasing accessibility to the service.

Microsoft Windows Virtual Desktop offers a multi-session Windows 10 experience, along with other optimizations and critical support, such as for Windows Server Remote Desktop Services (RDS) desktops. Plus, Windows Virtual Desktop can virtualize Windows 7 and received free Extended Security Updates (ESU) all the way through January 2023. This offering may be critical for organizations who have yet to migrate fully to Windows 10 or won’t be finished migrating when the traditional extended support for Windows 7 ends in January 2020.

What Does the Rising Interest in VDI Mean to You?

As VDI continues to make a bigger mark in the IT solutions landscape, it is a clear sign that Cloud Computing is here to stay. An increasing number of organizations will be adopting desktop and server virtualization in the near future and the strength and capabilities of VDI solutions will only continue to improve.

One estimate showed that 64 percent of companies were forced to increase their IT budgets mainly for the purpose of upgrading and replacing outdated IT infrastructure and other hardware. For smaller companies, 42 percent of their IT budget will be allocated to hardware investments, a shocking 11 percent increase over 2018.

However, by partnering with a VDI provider, dealing with aging hardware becomes less cumbersome as the vendor shoulders the majority of that burden for infrastructure related to the VDI service. If you are battling bottlenecks that are harming operational efficiency or want to enhance your computing capabilities without having to purchase, upgrade, or maintain costly infrastructure internally, VDI could be the powerful, cost-effective solution to your IT woes. Additionally, VDI solutions are highly flexible and scalable, ensuring you have the proper amount of computing capacity based on your unique and ever-changing needs.
